One important element of non-doing is cultivating the ability to concentrate on one thing at a time:
without the mind clutter of the other things that also need to be done.
Gardening without worrying about the laundry.
Playing with your child without waiting for the oven timer to go off.
Writing this blog post without simultaneously planning the next chapter in the book.
Uni-tasking as a step toward sitting with stillness is a beautiful way to nurture mindfulness, or conscious attention to what's in front of you. It opens the space for present moment awareness.
And present moment awareness is the gift that allows us to sit, without avoidance or escaping, with uncomfortable feelings like uncertainty, depression, rage, fear, sadness.
It also allows us to sit fully and completely with powerful feelings like awakening, realization, the light of truth feeling.
To be able be in the friction of sitting with discomfort & pain, while longing to anesthetize it with doing, is power.
It allows the space to drink the medicine, bitter + sweet.
And that medicine is a radical path to evolution, truth, + freedom.
