Personal coaching clients often approach me for additional resources on the inner journey. Once people get a taste of life coaching and how radically their perspective can shift in just a few sessions, they get hungry for more.
Right now, these are the Top 5 go-to books on my shelf for loosening up the mind ligaments, stretching my perspective, and being able to really quickly open a book, drop a quarter, and get inspired. A few spiritual classics, some raunchy fiction, and a book of poetry that never ceases to dazzle me and bring me back to the million blessings in our House of Light.
The four agreements, don miguel ruiz
I devoured this little book on vacation with my in-laws in Disney. Thank God - as delightful as Disney is for my little one, I needed some spiritual food to offset the commercialism around me. If you're tied to the "stories" you tell yourself, this is the book to free you from drama within and with others.
This little tome will teach you powerfully and quickly how to step outside of all of the societal contracts that we've accidentally signed.
the creative habit, twyla tharp
Creativity for Type A's! Every kind of creative, artist, or bored person will find something amazing to-do in here. From "Carry your tools" to the way she organizes her massive creative undertakings, Twyla Tharp gifts the reader about 1,000 ways to enter into creativity. Not just for professional artists - this book is for anyone who wants to loosen up, feels creative and never developed a craft.
a new earth, eckhart tolle
I don't know if anyone can live without this book. Each time I read it, it intersects with that point in my life to create an entirely different reading experience. The bible of mindfulness, vanquishing the ego, and discovering how to experience the entire spectrum of living, without surrendering to it.
I'm not sure how I would have survived a "horrible" experience being disgracefully fired from a job I cared deeply about, without this book. I was reading it right in the middle of a drama suitable for reality TV - intrigue, betrayal, harsh words... I floated through the whole experience in total peace.
house of light, mary oliver
I can't always been thinking + integrating new information! Sometimes I just need to be opened to the million small miracles around me in order to get back into my groove. This book stares into the eyes of nature and lifts the many mysteries around us straight onto the page and into my soul. Sometimes I read these at breakfast to my 4 year old, who at least gets that there's a grasshopper involved.
the awakening, kate chopin
So many of my clients come to me in a state of status quo, from a place of struggling to find peace within the lines they've drawn around their lives. In this novel, Kate Chopin lays down brilliant drop after brilliant drop of prose, bringing the pain + pleasure of awakening from deep slumber so vividly to life that I had to put this book down practically every other page.
If you haven't read this since required reading in high school, it's worth a new tour. I was so sad it ended I had to go read the spark notes.
I hope this summer reading list offers small ways to stretch big!
